Cooper Scholarship

Scholarship History:

Dr. John Cooper, Professor Emeritus of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, is devoted to higher education. His long and distinguished teaching career included appointments ranging from a high school teacher in Missouri to Professor and Associate Dean at Indiana University, and he has mentored hundreds of students in their pursuit of higher education. Although officially retired from IU in 1982, he continues to serve as a visiting professor to other universities, as well as actively working on research and writing projects. Dr. Cooper also made his mark in athletics and is widely recognized as being the first person to use the basketball jump-shot. A leading scorer in basketball in the Big Eight Conference in 1932, he was also the 400-meter Track champion in the Missouri Valley AAU in 1943. With his assistance, this scholarship was established to honor Dr. Cooper’s many accomplishments and contributions to the field of biomechanics, and to fulfill his desire to help graduate students pursue their dreams.
