Jane Fox Dance Scholarship

Scholarship History:

The contributions of Jane Fox to the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation were in the area of dance – folk, natural, and modern – their activities, professional techniques and theory. The area of dance, especially centered on natural and modern dance, had become a heated controversial topic nationally at the time of her tenure at Indiana University. Fox is credited with the pioneering effort of introducing, educating, and struggling for the acceptance of modern dance on the Indiana University campus. Fox stimulated the understanding and acceptance of modern dance through promotion of annual modern dance concerts, workshops and lectures, and intercollegiate Dance Days. Jane Fox’s dedication to instruction was evidenced by her genuine affection for teaching students, who, by and large, entered the University with meager knowledge and experience in modern dance. Fox established a provision in her will to provide an endowed fund in support of the Contemporary Dance program at the School of HPER. Fox passed away in 1991 at the age of 91. In 1993, the fund incorporated a scholarship for dance majors in recognition of her desire to support student growth and instruction in the field of contemporary dance.
