Spike Dixon Athletic Training Scholarship

Scholarship History:

DeWayne “Spike” Dixon served as the head athletic trainer ad Washington University and Marquette University prior to assuming the position of head trainer at Indiana University in 1946. Gradually Spike Dixon began focusing more of his attention on teaching athletic training skills and in 1961 he became the associate athletic trainer so he could develop and teach athletic training courses. During his career, Spike was one of the best known and highly regarded athletic trainers in the country. He was one of the founders of the National Athletic Trainers Association, and wrote the book “The Dixonary of Training Techniques.”  In 1986, family, alumni and friends established this Scholarship in honor of Spike Dixon. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Full-time status.
  • Graduate or undergraduate student.
  • Majoring in athletic training.
  • High academic achievement.
  • Evidence of both “success and promise” in the profession of athletic training.
  • Professional involvement in his/her chosen career.
  • Evidence of dedication to making athletic training a life-long career.
