Leroy "Bud" Getchell Scholarship
Scholarship History:
Dr. Getchell declined a professional baseball offer to begin the career he really wanted as a teacher and coach. He went on to become a national leader in the fitness and jogging trend of the 1980 and 1990s that swept the country. During his career he was a prolific author and wrote some of the leading books on fitness. Dr. Getchell joined the IU faculty in 1985 having previously served as a professor and director of the Adult Physical Fitness Programs at Ball State University. At IU he initially served as the Executive Director of the National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS) in Indianapolis. In 1991 he left NIFS to become a full-time professor in Bloomington and developed an undergraduate fitness major as a part of the exercise science curriculum and revived the Kinesiology Club. Following retirement, Dr. Getchell moved to Michigan. He plans to spend his time pursuing the academic opportunities of writing another fitness text and devoting time to his grandchildren. He also intends to enjoy golf, cross country skiing, woodworking, and model railroading. This scholarship was initially established by Ms. Shayla Holtkamp, a student of Dr. Getchell. Since that time, Dr. Getchell has also assisted with the funding.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Undergraduate status.
- Department of Kinesiology.
- Interest in the study of fitness.
- Satisfactory completion of Current Concepts in Physical Fitness (P216) and Introduction to Exercise Science (P212).
- Evidence of involvement in fitness.
- Exemplifies a physically fit person with regular workouts.
- Evidence of leadership in fitness programs.
- Demonstration of work experience in the area of fitness.
- Works or volunteers in fitness instructional classes (e.g. E119 – Personal Fitness).
- Active in the Kinesiology Club.
