Davies, Jones and Mosely Scholarship

Scholarship History:

The Davies, Jones and Mosely Scholarship was established in 2010 by Dr. Kenneth Mosely. Dr. Mosely received his B.S. from Morgan State University in 1970, his M.S. from Kansas State University in 1973, and his doctorate in Physical Education from Indiana University in 1976. He enjoyed a distinguished career at South Carolina State University which began in 1976. Dr. Mosely served as a full professor and Chair of the Department of Health and Physical Education from 1989 to 2004, and during that time it became the Department of Health Sciences. He served as project director for National Youth Sports program from 1988 to 2002. He also wrote numerous articles, obtained several funded grants and was honored by his profession on numerous occasions. He retired in 2005. Dr. Mosely also obtained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Mosely created the Davies, Jones and Mosely Scholarship to memorialize Dr. Evelyn Davies and Dr. Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones, Jr. Both individuals played a key role in his life. Dr. Davies was an advisor and professor at HPER and served as Dr. Mosely’s advisor and a key member of his dissertation committee. She also employed him as graduate teaching assistant for the Adapted Physical Education Program at Indiana University and she was a pioneer educator in the field of adapted physical education.

Dr. Jones received his undergraduate and graduate degree in the Recreation field from Indiana University in 1960 and 1961. He went on to receive his Doctorate in Recreation Administration from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1976. Dr. Jones also had a distinguished career in recreation. He served as Chair of the Graduate Programs in Urban Recreation at the University of Baltimore in 1972 and was appointed the Director of Recreation and Parks for Baltimore City by the mayor in 1988. Dr. Jones was a friend, teacher, and coach to Dr. Mosely. Dr. Jones served as swimming coach and professor at Morgan State University from 1961-1970 and was the first person to introduce Dr. Mosely to Indiana University.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Graduate status.
  • Graduate students in the School of HPER who are pursuing degrees in the fields of Recreation and Adapted Physical Education.
