Updyke/President's Challenge Fellowship

Scholarship History:

This award was established to honor Wynn F. Updyke, Professor Emeritus and former Associate Dean for Research and Academic Affairs in the School of HPER. He was a scholar, a leader, a wonderful listener, and a man of great integrity. After retiring from the School of HPER, Dr. Updyke served as the Director of the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Awards Program and was instrumental in bringing both the AAU Physical Fitness Program and the President’s Challenge to Indiana University. Dr. Updyke passed away in the spring of 2003.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Graduate status.
  • Pursuing a degree in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
  • Preference is to be given to students
    • Possessing broad undergraduate preparation (e.g., Liberal Arts) whose GRE scores and completed coursework demonstrate evidence of a sound science background as well as a strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Who may need to “make-up” course work due to a lack of previous study in HPER related fields.
    • Who are preparing for a career significantly related to the study, development and/or promotion of physical fitness.
    • Who are intending to pursue a thesis or dissertation track.
    • Who have demonstrated a commitment to the development of improved levels of physical fitness in the general population or sub group.
    • Who faithfully attend to the development and maintenance of his/her personal physical fitness status.
  • Recipients are expected to adhere to a code of personal value, which includes honesty, integrity, and concern for the rights and welfare of others
  • Submit at least two letters of recommendation for evidence of strong moral character.
  • Recipients should also be continuously involved in the research process in appropriate ways throughout the entire course of their graduate work.
