Degrees, Majors, and Certificates
Athletic Training/Teacher Preparation
Students who complete the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a dual major in athletic training and all-grade teaching are prepared to sit for the Board of Certification Exam. The four-year athletic training program stresses clinical experience in addition to course work with the fourth year devoted to education classes and student teaching. During the sophomore year, students work in a variety of athletic training rooms two to three times a week. As juniors, students rotate through the athletic training room working four different sports and attending all home games and practices. During the senior year, each student is assigned to a single sport and is present for all practices and games, both home and away. This progression exposes students to a variety of different philosophies and techniques as they work side-by-side with the university's talented and experienced professional athletic training staff to provide optimal care for the athletes who participate in the IU's 24 men's and women's sports.
Special Opportunities
The Athletic Training Student Council, composed of both graduate and undergraduate students, is regularly involved with philanthropic activities and also assists students with partial funding for professional development activities.
Careers
Board certified athletic trainers can be found working in a multitude of employment environments, including traditional college and university environments, industrial health settings, health care environments, and in performing arts, motor sports, and rodeo venues. Athletic trainers can also work as physician extenders and as clinic outreach athletic trainers. The added teaching certificate allows students to be teachers and athletic trainers in high schools.
