Dean, School of HPER
"Join us in engaging students in the quest for knowledge that prepares them to take on leadership roles in a society that desperately needs a renewed commitment to healthy lifestyles."
Ways to Give
There are many ways to give to the School of HPER.
Gifts through our Annual Fund support today's critical need for scholarships, modern technology and equipment, and research opportunities for students and faculty.
Endowed gifts are an investment in our future. These gifts, whether through cash, securities, life insurance, or charitable annuities and trusts, provide critical support in perpetuity. A named faculty position, a lecture series, undergraduate scholarships, and graduate fellowships are all made possible through endowments. Read more about establishing endowed chairs and professorships and scholarships and fellowships.
Making a charitable bequest to HPER reduces estate taxes for your heirs and brings you the satisfaction of knowing your legacy to HPER will benefit future generations. You can choose how and where your gift will be used. Read about some of the different options for planned giving that can benefit you and the School of HPER.
For more information about any of our giving options, including Charitable Remainder Unitrusts and Charitable Gift Annuities, contact the Director of Development and External Affairs.
Donors may give to the School of HPER online through the Indiana University Foundation.
Chairs and Professorships
"When you build, build for a lifetime. Build for a thousand years."
—Herman B Wells
A great teacher has the ability to challenge and instruct a new generation of leaders, awakening a spark of interest for research and learning that lasts a lifetime. HPER's outstanding faculty plays an important role in building the economic strength of the state of Indiana. There are recreation leaders who teach people to lead more healthful lifestyles, researchers whose studies of asthma, obesity, and smoking cessation have changed lives, and professors whose personal connections with students have had a major impact on those students' career paths. From combating AIDS to understanding obesity, our faculty's research has a positive impact on people's lives throughout the state and beyond.
To remain competitive in a market for outstanding teachers, HPER seeks to substantially increase our faculty endowments. By doing so, we ensure that future generations of students have the opportunities created by outstanding faculty. See a list of endowed chairs and professorships in the School of HPER.
Scholarships and Fellowships
Through endowed scholarships and annual awards, HPER is able to provide more than $700,000 annually in student financial assistance. Scholarship and fellowship support makes it possible for promising students to complete a HPER degree, ensuring that the school will continue to attract and retain the most outstanding and highly qualified students. See a list of endowed scholarships and fellowships in the School of HPER.
Planned Giving
You can support the School of HPER's endowments through the Indiana University Foundation in the following ways:
Income Matching Program
Matching gifts are an effective way to help HPER. The full match will consist of a payout equal to 5 percent of the principal on an annual basis and will be available for gifts of at least $750,000 for an endowed professorship and $1.5 million for an endowed chair. If the gift falls between $750,000 and $1.5 million, the match will be based on a ratio of 1:2.
Cash and Securities
Give outright gifts of cash or securities that meet the minimum $750,000 to be eligible for the matching program. These gifts may be received all at once or as a pledge payable over five years. Matching funds will be provided once payment has been received. Gifts of securities will be recorded at their fair market value on the date of the transfer. Other types of outright gifts will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
Charitable remainder trusts offer the opportunity to make a substantial gift to IU while receiving life income. The payout on the match will be based on the face value of your gift to the IU Foundation, even if the remainder value exceeds the face value at the time the trust terminates.
Charitable Gift Annuities and Pooled Income Funds
Charitable gift annuities and pooled income funds have many of the same benefits and rules as the charitable remainder trusts. They will qualify for the matching program under the same criteria described above. Because of their irrevocable nature, these gifts qualify for a match from the university based on the face value of the gift when the IU Foundation initially receives it.
Charitable Lead Trusts
If you want to reduce your current income but wish to retain the assets for your family, a charitable lead trust can be useful. Because charitable lead trusts pay the income they generate directly to the IU Foundation, they qualify for the matching program if the income generated by the trust to the IU Foundation meets the minimum amount required. This trust can be used to transfer substantial amounts of wealth from generation to generation, while greatly reducing the estate, inheritance, and gift taxes. If this payout is received or pledged during the match period, it qualifies in the same way as an outright gift.
Bequests
Your gift to HPER can be made through your will or estate plan. Newly established expectancies may qualify for the matching program as long as they meet the minimum levels and are first documented during the matching period.
