Spring 2012 HPER Internal Funding Opportunities for Faculty Research

During spring semester 2012, the School of HPER will offer six internal mechanisms to support faculty research. A description of the mechanisms is listed below, with links to more details about the application process. Those eligible for these funding mechanisms are all individuals who hold a faculty rank within the School of HPER, although some mechanisms are limited to faculty within particular ranks as specified in the descriptions and application guidelines. Faculty are eligible to apply for funding under multiple mechanisms, but should only be listed as principal or co-principal investigator on one application under any specific mechanism.

Questions related to these internal mechanisms should be directed to Michael Reece, Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies (mireece@indiana.edu)

HPER Faculty Research Grant Program (FRGP)

The aim of the HPER FRGP is to provide individual faculty members within HPER support for conducting research that will become the basis for a significant grant submission to a federal agency or other major funding source within one year of the proposed project’s completion. Projects must be completed within one calendar year from receipt of award; investigators will be required to submit an initial progress report within six months of receipt of award and a final progress report within one year of receipt of award. Continued funding (or access to funds) will be contingent upon progress toward the project’s stated objectives. Investigators receiving these funds will also be expected to present the results of the project in a public research seminar within HPER. Research partnerships between junior and senior faculty within HPER will be given priority consideration. Also of priority for funding will be applications that represent collaborative research being conducted by faculty from two or more different departments within HPER. The award funds may be used at the discretion of the faculty member (e.g., graduate student support, equipment, data gathering or analysis). Funds may not be used for summer salary or to support teaching or service-related buyouts.

Deadline for Spring 2012: February 15, 2012
Range of Awards: $15,000 - $25,000 (average award anticipated =$20,000)
Anticipated Number of Awards Spring 2012: 2-3

Incentive Grants for the Development of Extramural Research Proposals

The aim of the proposal development incentive grants is to provide support to faculty members who have completed preliminary research necessary to prepare an application for funding to a federal or other major funding source. Recipients of these awards will be linked to the IU OVPR Social Science Research Consortium which will provide in-depth consultation services throughout the proposal/application development and submission process. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient preliminary research to support the submission of a major funding application and must have an identified mechanism and entity to which the proposal will be submitted no later than December 31, 2012. Award funds may be used at the discretion of the faculty member but the budget must reflect expenses associated directly with activities necessary to prepare the proposal (e.g., travel or other expenses associated with proposal development such as meetings with academic or community partners or funding agency representatives, research assistant support, assistance with data analyses). Limited funds under this mechanism may be used for summer salary support for summer 2012 (maximum of $5,000 salary and fringe combined). Given the nature of this funding mechanism, faculty considering the submission of an application are encouraged to consult with Michael Reece in advance of their submission.

Deadline for Spring 2012: February 15, 2012
Range of Awards: $5,000 - $10,000 (average award anticipated =$7,500)
Anticipated Number of Awards Spring 2012: 3-4

Developmental Research Grants for Pre-Tenure Faculty

The aim of the pre-tenure developmental research grants is to support preliminary studies being conducted by tenure-eligible, yet pre-tenure, faculty members to provide funding for research projects that are supportive of one’s continuing development of a sustainable and fundable research trajectory. Faculty members receiving these awards will be expected to participate in a series of research mentorship meetings with a team of senior HPER faculty members (to be designated by the HPER Research Council) aimed at helping recipients to further articulate their research program. Applications will only be accepted from individuals who are in a tenure-eligible rank and who have not been awarded tenure at the time of submission. Award funds may be used for direct costs associated with the project (e.g., participant incentives, research assistant support, travel, and other activities associated with data collection and analysis). Funds may not be used for summer salary or to support teaching or service-related buyouts.

Deadline for Spring 2012: March 1, 2012
Range of Awards: $5,000 - $10,000 (average award anticipated =$7,500)
Anticipated Number of Awards Spring 2012: 6

Grants to Support Community-Based Research Partnerships in Indiana

The aim of the research partnership development grants is to support efforts associated with the development of research-based partnerships with community-based organizations and other entities (e.g., governmental agencies, professional associations) within Indiana in order to facilitate research that has direct and demonstrable outcomes beneficial to populations within the state. Proposals should reflect plans for the development of sustainable research-based partnerships with clearly-identified and strategic entities that will simultaneously contribute to both the research mission of HPER and improvements to the health status and quality of life of specific communities within Indiana. Award funds may be used for direct costs associated with the project (e.g., participant incentives, research assistant support, travel, and other activities associated with data collection and analysis). Funds may not be used for summer salary or to support teaching or service-related buyouts.

Deadlines for Spring 2012: March 1, 2012
Range of Awards: $1,000 - $3,000 (average award anticipated =$2,000)
Anticipated Number of Awards Spring 2012: 3-4

General Research Support Fund

The aim of the general research support fund is to provide limited support for basic expenses associated with new or ongoing research efforts by faculty. Funds may be used to support expenses associated with data collection, data analysis, equipment, software, research assistant support, travel, and other basic needs. Funds may not be used for summer salary or to support teaching or service-related buyouts. Funds may be requested at any time during the semester prior to the deadline and funds will be allocated on a rolling basis until funds have been exhausted.

Deadlines for Spring 2012: Rolling submission and review starting January 15, 2012; final deadline of April 1, 2012
Range of Awards: $500 – $1,500 (average award anticipated = $1,000)
Anticipated Number of Awards Spring 2012: 10

International Research Travel Grants

The aim of the international research travel grants is to provide support to faculty members who are conducting research in settings outside the U.S. or who are working to develop research-based partnerships with community-based, governmental, or professional entities outside the U.S. Funds are not intended to support general travel to international settings for research dissemination (e.g., conference presentations). Funds may be used to support travel that is supportive of meetings with partners outside the U.S. that are intended to support the development or maintenance of a research partnership and/or the collection of data in settings outside the U.S. Priority projects will include those that demonstrate the potential for a longer-term, sustainable and fundable line of research outside of the U.S.

Funds may not be used for summer salary or to support teaching or service-related buyouts.
